What's the best thing to offer as a one click upsell?
This is a question we get a lot, and for brands selling consumable products (like supplements, makeup & beauty, health etc.), here’s what we learned.
In our cosmetic brand, if a customer purchases one of my flagship products, then I’ll offer them one more (or maybe two or three more) of the same exact item they just purchased.
Data from nearly one million orders across over 11,000 different Shopify stores has shown us that this is the best upsell to start with.
And we’ve seen some pretty successful upsells in our day like:
Free shipping
Warranties
Subscriptions
Multi-product Kits
But for nearly all other categories of product in your store, the best upsell to offer first will be this:
For non-consumable products (like apparel, tech, and home goods), we recommend offering complimentary products based on what the customer just purchased.
For example, if your customer buys a camera, they might also need a tripod. If they buy a basketball, they might also need a hand pump.

Lastly — free or faster shipping and product warranties can be great incentives for your upsells too, especially if you prefer not to offer discounts on the product itself.
What's the best price point for upsells?
To answer this, let’s look at the data for the last 800,000 orders that One Click Upsell processed
So the average is just over $20 per upsell, but your price point should be dictated by whatever the initial sale is.
In our Shopify store, we like to offer them something that’s a little bit less than their initial purchase.
And because OCU lets you set your funnels based on what your customer buys first, you always know exactly what the upsells price (and discount) is going to be.
We don’t do heavy discounting in our marketing. In fact, we never discount our products more than 20% — and that’s only reserved for our highest ticket item.
However, in general the bigger discount, the better.
15% off works great for us, but this is something you can definitely split-test on your own store to see if a larger or smaller discount is more successful.
